Booker T. Washington
(April 5, 1856 – November 14, 1915)
was the founder and first president of Tuskegee Institute, which later became Tuskegee University. He was one of the most influential African-American intellectuals of the late 19th century and made his mark as an educator, author, orator, businessman and adviser to several presidents of the United States. Washington was from the last generation of black American leaders born into slavery and became the leading voice of the former slaves and their descendants.

Dr. George Washington Carver
(c. 1864[1] – January 5, 1943)
was one of the most prominent agricultural scientists of the early 20th century. While a professor at Tuskegee Institute, Carver developed techniques to improve types of soils depleted by repeated plantings of cotton. From the peanut–primarily used at that time to feed livestock–he developed hundreds of products, including plastics, synthetic rubber, and paper. From soybeans, Carver invented a process for producing paints and stains, for which three separate patents were issued.

Rosa Parks
(February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005)
was an American activist in the civil rights movement best known for her pivotal role in the Montgomery bus boycott. The United States Congress has honored her as “the first lady of civil rights” and “the mother of the freedom movement”. Rosa Parks was born in Tuskegee and a park honoring her legacy can be found on the Tuskegee Public Square.

The Tuskegee Airmen
were a group of African American military pilots who fought in World War II. They formed the 332d Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group (Medium) of the United States Army Air Forces . The Tuskegee airmen received praise for their excellent combat record earned while protecting American bombers from enemy fighters.

Commodores
is an American funk and soul band, which was at its peak in the late 1970s through the mid 1980s. The members of the group met as mostly freshmen at Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1968, and signed with Motown in November 1972, having first caught the public eye opening for the Jackson 5 while on tour.

Zora Neale Hurston
was an American author, anthropologist, and filmmaker. Born in Notasulga, Alabama, she portrayed racial struggles in the early-1900s American South and published research on hoodoo. The most popular of her four novels is Their Eyes Were Watching God, published in 1937. She also wrote more than 50 short stories, plays, and essays
